What does Day Master strength (shen qiang / shen ruo) actually measure?

It measures how well-supported your Day Master — the Heavenly Stem of your birth day — is by the rest of the chart. Support arrives from three places: the season you were born in, roots in the Earthly Branches, and nearby stems of the same element or of the element that feeds it. Plenty of support reads as strong (shen qiang); little support reads as weak (shen ruo). It is a structural description of the chart, not a verdict on the person.

What is the Useful God (yong shen), and what is it for?

Accepted Answer

The Useful God is the element a chart most needs in order to move back toward balance. If the Day Master is over-supported, the Useful God is usually the element that drains or controls it; if it is under-supported, the one that feeds or reinforces it. Practitioners treat it as an emphasis — which seasons, directions and activities tend to run more smoothly — rather than as a fixed rule.

Is a strong Day Master better than a weak one?

Accepted Answer

No. The traditional aim is zhong he, balance, not maximum strength. An over-strong Day Master reads as conviction that struggles to yield; an over-weak one as sensitivity to circumstances. Both extremes are simply patterns to work with, and each has its own Useful God. The most workable charts sit near the middle, not at either end.

How do I find out whether my own chart is strong or weak?

No. Strength on its own says nothing about fortune. A weak chart whose Useful God is well placed often reads more comfortably than a strong one where that element is missing entirely. Strength is one input among several, and treating it as a standalone verdict is the beginner mistake this series is built to correct.
