Two Kinds of Backup

The Seasonal Mandate tells you whether the macro environment supports your Day Master. But macro conditions alone don't determine survival. A tree in spring still needs soil nutrients (underground support) and neighboring trees (surface-level wind protection) to thrive.

In BaZi, those two backup systems have precise names:

  • Root (通根, Tōng Gēn) — hidden elemental support buried inside the Earthly Branches
  • Reveal (透干, Tòu Gān) — visible same-element support among the other Heavenly Stems

Together with the Seasonal Mandate, they form the complete diagnostic framework for Day Master strength.

Root: The Underground Infrastructure

What Counts as a Root?

Every Earthly Branch contains one to three Hidden Stems — Heavenly Stems tucked inside the Branch like elements stored in a container. When any of those Hidden Stems matches your Day Master's element, your Day Master has a Root in that Branch.

Finding Roots for a 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) Day Master
  • 寅 (Yín, Tiger) contains: 甲 Jiǎ (Wood), 丙 Bǐng (Fire), 戊 Wù (Earth) → Root found (甲 = same element)
  • 卯 (Mǎo, Rabbit) contains: 乙 Yǐ (Wood) → Root found (乙 = Wood, same element family)
  • 亥 (Hài, Pig) contains: 壬 Rén (Water), 甲 Jiǎ (Wood) → Root found (甲 = same element)
  • 辰 (Chén, Dragon) contains: 戊 Wù (Earth), 乙 Yǐ (Wood), 癸 Guǐ (Water) → Root found (乙 = Wood, residual root)
  • 酉 (Yǒu, Rooster) contains: 辛 Xīn (Metal) → No root (Metal ≠ Wood)

Think of it this way: Hidden Stems are like underground water channels. If any channel carries your element, your Day Master can tap into it for sustenance. The more channels, the more stable your foundation.

Not All Roots Are Equal

Root strength varies based on two dimensions:

Dimension 1: Position within the Branch (Main Qi, Middle Qi, Residual Qi)

Each Branch has a hierarchy of Hidden Stems:

PositionNameStrengthDescription
1stMain Qi (本气, Běn Qì, "original energy")StrongestThe Branch's primary element
2ndMiddle Qi (中气, Zhōng Qì, "middle energy")MediumSecondary element
3rdResidual Qi (余气, Yú Qì, "residual energy")WeakestTrace element

A 甲 (Jiǎ) Wood Day Master rooted in 寅 (Yín, where Wood is Main Qi) has a much stronger foundation than one rooted in 辰 (Chén, where Wood is only Residual Qi). It's the difference between a deep taproot and a shallow surface root.

Dimension 2: Branch Position in the Chart (proximity to the Day Master)

Branch PositionProximityRoot Power
Day BranchDirectly beneath DMStrongest — intimate, personal support
Month BranchAdjacentVery strong (+ carries Seasonal Mandate weight)
Hour BranchAdjacentStrong
Year BranchFurthest awayWeakest — distant support

The Day Branch sits directly under the Day Master like the ground beneath your feet. A Root there is structural, personal, and always accessible. A Root in the Year Branch is like a family trust fund in another country — it exists, but you can't draw on it as easily.

Reveal: Allies in Plain Sight

What Counts as a Reveal?

A Reveal occurs when any of the other three Heavenly Stems in your chart is the same element as your Day Master (Companion stars: 比肩 Bǐ Jiān or 劫财 Jié Cái) or generates your Day Master's element (Resource stars: 正印 Zhèng Yìn or 偏印 Piān Yìn).

Finding Reveals for a 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) Day Master

If the other three stems are: Year = 甲 (Jiǎ), Month = 癸 (Guǐ), Hour = 庚 (Gēng)

  • Year 甲 Jiǎ (Wood) → Companion Reveal — same element, direct reinforcement
  • Month 癸 Guǐ (Water) → Resource Reveal — Water generates Wood, nourishing support
  • Hour 庚 Gēng (Metal) → Not a Reveal — Metal controls Wood, this is opposition

If Roots are underground infrastructure, Reveals are allies standing right beside you — visible, public, immediately effective. Everyone can see you have backup.

Reveal Types

Reveal TypeTen GodHow It Helps
Same-element StemCompanion (比肩 Bǐ Jiān / 劫财 Jié Cái)Adds raw power directly — like a co-founder sharing the workload
Generating StemResource (正印 Zhèng Yìn / 偏印 Piān Yìn)Provides ongoing nourishment — like a mentor or sponsor feeding you resources

The diagram below shows 癸 (Guǐ, Yin Water) generating 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood) via the 生 (Shēng, "generate") relationship:

Four Support Profiles

The combination of Root and Reveal status creates four distinct support profiles:

Deep-Rooted & Revealed: The Fortress

Root present + Reveal present. The Day Master has both underground infrastructure and surface allies. This is the most robust Strong configuration.

Analogy

A tree with deep roots AND thick canopy. Wind, rain, drought — nothing shakes it easily. The Day Master has both structural resilience and visible reinforcement.

Deep-Rooted, No Reveal: The Sleeper

Root present + no Reveal. The Day Master has hidden reserves that aren't obvious on the surface. Strength exists but stays quiet until needed.

This profile often belongs to people who seem understated but reveal surprising resilience under pressure — the quiet ones who always land on their feet.

Revealed, No Root: The Facade

Reveal present + no Root. The Day Master has visible allies but no deep structural support. It looks strong on the surface but lacks foundation.

Think of a company with impressive branding and a charismatic team but weak fundamentals. It works fine in good conditions, but a crisis exposes the shallow base.

Neither Root Nor Reveal: The Networker

No Root + no Reveal. The Day Master has minimal internal support. This is a classically Weak configuration — but "weak" here means the Day Master's optimal strategy is to seek external support rather than go it alone.

Weak ≠ Powerless

A Day Master with no Roots and no Reveals is like a startup founder with no inherited wealth and no co-founders. It doesn't mean they can't succeed — it means their path to success runs through partnerships, mentorship, and strategic resource acquisition. Different route, same destination.

Worked Example: Counting Roots and Reveals

Let's practice with a complete chart:

Year
Month
Day
Hour

In this chart, the Heavenly Stems are: 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood), 丙 (Bǐng, Yang Fire), 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood — the Day Master), and 乙 (Yǐ, Yin Wood). The Earthly Branches are: 子 (Zǐ, Rat), 寅 (Yín, Tiger), 辰 (Chén, Dragon), and 亥 (Hài, Pig).

Day Master: 甲 (Jiǎ, Yang Wood)

Root Analysis:

BranchPositionHidden StemsRoot?Strength
子 Zǐ (Year)Furthest癸 Guǐ (Water)No direct Wood rootWater supports indirectly
寅 Yín (Month)Adjacent甲 Jiǎ, 丙 Bǐng, 戊 WùYes — Main Qi rootVery strong (Month position + Main Qi)
辰 Chén (Day)Directly below戊 Wù, 乙 Yǐ, 癸 GuǐYes — Residual Qi rootModerate (close position, but Residual Qi)
亥 Hài (Hour)Adjacent壬 Rén, 甲 JiǎYes — Middle Qi rootStrong (adjacent + Middle Qi)

Result: 3 Roots — including a powerful Main Qi root in the Month Branch. Very solid foundation.

Reveal Analysis:

StemPositionElementReveal?
甲 Jiǎ (Year)FurthestWoodYes — Companion
丙 Bǐng (Month)AdjacentFireNo — Wood generates Fire (drain)
乙 Yǐ (Hour)AdjacentWoodYes — Companion

Result: 2 Reveals — two same-element allies on the surface.

Combined with Season: Month Branch 寅 (Yín) = Spring = Wood season → Gets the Season.

Verdict: Gets the Season + 3 Roots + 2 Reveals = Clearly Strong Day Master. All three factors point in the same direction.

Complications to Watch For

In real-world analysis, Roots and Reveals can be disrupted:

Root Disruption: If the Branch containing your Root is Clashed (冲, Chōng, "clash") by another Branch, the Root gets weakened or destroyed. A 寅 (Yín) Root clashed by 申 (Shēn) — known as 寅申冲 (Yín Shēn Chōng, "Tiger-Monkey Clash") — is like an earthquake cracking your foundation.

Reveal Disruption: If a Reveal Stem gets Combined (合, Hé, "fusion") with another Stem and transforms into a different element, your ally has effectively switched sides. An 乙 (Yǐ) Wood Reveal that combines with 庚 (Gēng) Metal — known as 乙庚合 (Yǐ Gēng Hé, "Yǐ-Gēng Fusion") — and transforms into Metal turns from friend to foe.

Distance Matters: Support from adjacent positions (Month and Hour pillars) is immediate and potent. Support from the Year Pillar is like a distant relative — real but attenuated.

These complications are advanced topics, but knowing they exist helps you understand why two charts with the same element count can receive different strength assessments.
