Special Patterns — When the Rules Break

The Eight Standard Patterns assume a certain balance — your Day Master has enough strength to hold its own, and the forces in your chart negotiate with each other in an orderly way. But some charts don't work like that.

Some charts have such an extreme imbalance that the standard framework simply doesn't apply. When that happens, we enter the territory of Special Patterns (特殊格局, Tè Shū Gé Jú).

When Do Standard Rules Break?

Standard Patterns require the Day Master to have some degree of autonomy — enough support to "stand up" against the Month Branch's dominant force. But when:

The Day Master has almost zero support (no Companions, no Resource to nurture it)
One element or Ten God category is overwhelmingly dominant
Stem combination conditions are fully met, transforming the chart's identity

...the chart can't function as a standard architecture anymore. It needs a different operating model.

The Core Insight

Special Patterns follow a simple but counterintuitive principle: when you can't fight the dominant force, join it. Instead of trying to balance an imbalance, the chart fully commits to the strongest energy. Resistance isn't just futile — it's counterproductive.

Follow Patterns (从格, Cóng Gé) — Going With the Flow

Follow Patterns are the most common type of Special Pattern. The Day Master is so weak that it "follows" (从, cóng) whichever force dominates the chart.

Conditions for a Follow Pattern

Day Master is extremely weak: Almost no support from Companions or Resource anywhere in the chart
One force overwhelmingly dominates: It occupies most of the chart's energy
No effective rescue: Even if there's a tiny bit of support, it can't change the fundamental equation

Startup Analogy

Imagine a startup trying to compete in a market completely dominated by one tech giant. The standard playbook says "differentiate and compete." But sometimes the power imbalance is so vast that the smart move is to fully integrate with the dominant platform — become the best plugin, the most essential partner. That's what a Follow Pattern does. Instead of fighting the overwhelming force, it aligns with it completely.

The Three Types of Follow Patterns

Follow Wealth Pattern (从财格, Cóng Cái Gé)

The chart is dominated by Wealth energy, and the Day Master follows it completely.

Profile: Extraordinarily practical and resource-sensitive. These people have an almost instinctive ability to spot opportunity and convert it into value. They're pure execution machines.
Thrives in: Business, resource management, investing, deal-making
Critical rule: Follow Wealth fears Resource appearing — if Resource shows up to support the Day Master, it breaks the "follow" alignment and the chart becomes confused rather than focused

Follow Authority Pattern (从官杀格, Cóng Guān Shā Gé)

The chart is dominated by Officer/Killings energy, and the Day Master completely submits.

Profile: Extremely order-oriented and execution-driven. These people thrive in highly structured environments and can navigate complex hierarchies with ease. They lead by understanding power dynamics perfectly.
Thrives in: Government, corporate leadership, military, high-discipline organizations
Critical rule: Follow Authority fears Output (Eating/Hurting) appearing — Output attacks Authority, undermining the very force the chart depends on

Follow Output Pattern (从儿格, Cóng Ér Gé)

The chart is dominated by Eating God/Hurting Officer energy, and the Day Master pours everything into creative expression.

Profile: Overflowing with talent and creative drive. Everything in their life revolves around producing, creating, expressing. They can't stop making things — art, ideas, content, inventions.
Thrives in: Art, writing, speaking, education, technology invention, content creation
Critical rule: Follow Output fears Resource appearing — Resource suppresses Output, blocking the creative channel the chart depends on

What Follow Pattern People Are Like

Follow Pattern people tend to be specialists taken to the extreme. Because all their energy is channeled in one direction, they often achieve remarkable things in that domain — but may be noticeably underdeveloped in others.

Think of it like memory allocation: a Standard Pattern distributes RAM across multiple processes. A Follow Pattern allocates nearly everything to a single process. That process runs extraordinarily well, but the system has very little capacity for anything else.

Rarity Check

True Follow Patterns are very rare. Many charts that look "weak" still have enough support to function as Standard Patterns with a weak Day Master. The conditions for a genuine Follow Pattern are strict — don't assume you have one just because your Day Master isn't the strongest element.

Full Dominance Patterns (专旺格, Zhuān Wàng Gé) — One Element Rules All

Full Dominance Patterns occur when one element is so overwhelmingly present that it essentially IS the chart. Unlike Follow Patterns (where the DM is weak and follows something else), Full Dominance can occur when the DM's own element is the dominant one.

These people embody one element's qualities so completely that understanding that single element tells you most of what you need to know about their nature.

Cycle legend: 曲直 (Qū Zhí) = Wood dominance, 炎上 (Yán Shàng) = Fire dominance, 稼穑 (Jià Sè) = Earth dominance, 从革 (Cóng Gé) = Metal dominance, 润下 (Rùn Xià) = Water dominance. The arrows labeled 生 (shēng, "produces") show the productive cycle.

Transformation Patterns (化气格, Huà Qì Gé) — The Rarest of All

Transformation Patterns are BaZi's rarest configuration. They occur when a Heavenly Stem combination (天干合, Tiān Gān Hé) fully transforms, causing the entire chart to be dominated by the transformed element.

We'll explore the transformation mechanism in detail in Article 5. For now, just know that these charts undergo a kind of identity metamorphosis — the Day Master and another stem fuse into something entirely new.

Common Misconceptions

"Special Patterns are better than Standard Patterns"

Not at all. There's no hierarchy. A well-configured Standard Pattern delivers excellent outcomes. A poorly supported Special Pattern can be deeply frustrating.

"My Day Master is weak, so I must have a Follow Pattern"

Weak Day Master ≠ Follow Pattern. A weak DM in a Standard Pattern gets helped by its Useful God. A Follow Pattern DM is SO weak that helping it is impossible — the strategy flips entirely. The difference matters enormously for analysis.

"Special Patterns mean an extreme life"

They mean concentrated energy, not necessarily dramatic events. A Follow Wealth person might simply be exceptionally good at business. A Full Dominance Wood person might just be remarkably principled and growth-oriented.
